Leg Injury on Stowe Pinnacle

A 67 year old woman injured her ankle and badly scraped her leg while hiking on the Pinnacle Trail. Stowe Mountain Rescue responded with assistance from Stowe Rescue Squad and Stowe Police. She was about half way up the trail to the summit. A hasty team of Mountain Rescue personel found the patient and treated her, immobilizing the ankle injury and bandaging the abrasion. She could not bear weight on the injured leg.

The patient was packaged in the litter with a vacuum mattress and sleeping bag. She was evacuated by litter and wheel without incident to the main Pinnacle parking lot and transported to Copley Hospital by SRS.

Anxious hiker

A young man was hiking the Long Trail south from VT Route 108 to the summit of MT. Mansfield with five friends. He was afraid of heights and was unaware of the exposure along that stretch. He became scared, anxious and unable to continue hiking and called 911 for assistance.

With help from friends, he was able to continue hiking and the group was recommended to hike to Summit Station at the top of the Toll Road for a ride down the mountain.

Mountain biking crash

A mountain biker with a knee injury on the “Bridgey Trail” at Cady Hill reported that he couldn’t make it out on his own.

Stowe Mountain Rescue located the man and carried him by litter a short distance to where he was transferred to an ATV and driven to a trailhead where Stowe Rescue was waiting with the ambulance to transport him to Copley Hospital.

Mountain biking crash

A man broke his leg while mountain biking in the Cady Hill Trails. He was accessed by ATV with a rescue boggan.

His leg was splinted and he was placed on vacuum mattress.

He was then placed into wheeled litter and brought to the trailhead via an ATV and rescue boggan, where an ambulance awaited.

Mountain biking crash

A teen girl crashed while mountain biking at Cady Hill on Charlie’s near the Zog intersection.

Stowe Mountain Rescue responded on the ATV.

She was located and was able to walk to the ATV and was given a ride out to the Van Dyke residence.

Long Trail Hiker

Richmond Back Country Rescue requested assistant with an experienced Long Trail section hiker experiencing a medical emergency on the Long Trail on Camel’s Hump. The man hiked to Monclair Glen Lodge where he was met by a team of rescuers. He was evaluated and it was determined that his weakness, loss of balance, headache and muscle cramping was the result of a long-term Magnesium deficiency.

The man was able to hike out with assistance and was transported to the Medical Center by Richmond Rescue.

Leg laceration on Mt. Mansfield

A 9 year old hiking with his family on the Hazelton Trail on Mount Mansfield slipped and badly lacerated his knee. He was unable to bear weight on the injured leg and bleeding heavily, but his family applied first aid to stop the bleeding. Rescuers accessed him via ATV.

He was treated for his injuries, loaded into a litter and carried a short distance to the ATV. He was transported to the Gondola base by ATV without incident and then transported to Copley Hospital by Stowe Rescue.

Lost at Moss Glenn Falls

A woman became lost while walking near Moss Glenn Falls and called 911 for assistance. Her coordinates were obtained through the 911 call. Stowe Mountain Rescue attempted to talk the subject back onto the trail without success.

As darkness was approaching, she was instructed to remain stationary and call back 911 to obtain her current location. Stowe Mountain Rescue used an ATV to transport a team rescuers up a VAST trail near the woman, who was found and returned to her car without incident.

Lost on Stowe Pinnacle

A 28 year old man called 911 to report that he had been hiking on the Stowe Pinnacle but on his way down had decided to take a side trip to get another view. After hiking for several hours it was now getting dark and he didn’t know where he was.

After getting his cell phone coordinates from 911, and a description of the terrain he had hiked it was determined that he was just south of the summit of Mt. Worcester on the Skyline Trail.

A team of three from Stowe Mountain Rescue was sent up and over Mt. Worcester to escort the subject back to the trailhead and gave him a ride back to his car.
