“Most people don’t put a lot of thought into how the Stowe Fire Department or Stowe EMS do their jobs.”

Being there when the community needs them most is something Stowe Fire Chief Mark Sgantas and EMS Chief Scott Brinkman take seriously, to say the least, and they’re concerned about the downward trend in volunteerism on which the two departments rely.

“Most people call 911.” and know that someone will show up to put out the fire, help a senior who fell out of bed, or get the person in cardiac arrest to the hospital, Sgantas said — and, in almost every case, that expectation is met.

The fire department’s ranks are at around 30. For now, that’s enough, but it may not always be.
